What is the difference between natural stone and engineered stone?
Natural stone (marble, quartzite, granite, travertine, dolomite) is cut directly from quarried rock. No two slabs are identical — the pattern, tone, and movement are formed over millions of years. Engineered stone is manufactured from crushed quartz or other minerals bound with resin, producing a consistent, uniform surface. Both can be fabricated and installed by Elite Marble & Granite. Natural stone offers uniqueness and prestige; engineered stone offers consistency and uniformity.
What is the best stone for a kitchen benchtop in Sydney?
Browse our stone materials →The most popular choices for Sydney kitchen benchtops are quartzite (Taj Mahal, Super White), dolomite (Superwhite, White Dolomite), and marble (Calacatta Gold, Bianco Carrara). Quartzite and dolomite are harder and more resistant to etching than marble, making them more practical for busy kitchens. Marble remains the premium aesthetic choice for clients who understand its maintenance requirements. Engineered stone is also an option for those wanting a consistent, low-maintenance surface.
What is the difference between marble and quartzite?
Compare materials →Marble is a metamorphic rock formed from limestone — it is softer, more porous, and susceptible to etching from acids (citrus, vinegar, wine). Quartzite is harder, denser, and more stain-resistant, making it more suitable for kitchen benchtops in active households. Visually, some quartzites (like Taj Mahal and Super White) closely resemble marble, offering a similar aesthetic with better durability.
What is the difference between Calacatta and Statuario marble?
Both are premium Italian marbles from the Carrara region. Calacatta has a warm white base with bold, dramatic veining in gold and grey — it is the benchmark luxury marble and typically more expensive due to its rarity. Statuario has a brighter, colder white base with more graphic, linear grey veining. Statuario reads as more architectural; Calacatta reads as warmer and more decorative. Both are widely used in Sydney for benchtops, feature walls, and bathroom applications.
Is travertine a good choice for bathrooms?
Yes. Travertine is one of the most enduring choices for bathrooms. Its natural warmth, texture, and tonal variation create a softness that marble and quartzite cannot replicate. Classic Travertine and Noce Travertine are widely specified for wall cladding, flooring, and shower surrounds. Filled and honed finishes are most practical for wet areas — comfortable underfoot and easy to maintain. Travertine is also appropriate for outdoor areas and pool surrounds.
How long does stone fabrication take in Sydney?
Our full process →From approved digital template to completed fabrication, the typical lead time is 5–10 business days for standard projects. Complex projects with bookmatched panels, curved profiles, or premium materials may take longer depending on material availability. The full process — brief review, site measure, digital templating, fabrication, and installation — typically runs 3–4 weeks from initial engagement to installed stone.
What is digital laser templating in stone fabrication?
Digital laser templating uses a laser measurement device to capture every dimension of your space to millimetre accuracy. The data is converted into a CAD file that goes directly to the CNC cutting machine — eliminating the measurement error common with traditional paper or MDF templates. Elite Marble & Granite uses digital templating on every project. It captures wall returns, out-of-square corners, plumbing positions, and any condition that drawings alone do not show.
What stone thickness should I specify for a benchtop?
Edge profile options →20mm is the standard benchtop thickness for residential kitchens and bathroom vanities. It is structurally appropriate for most spans and is the most cost-effective option. 30mm and 40mm thicknesses add visual weight and presence — often specified for island benchtops where the edge is visible from all sides. Some premium edge profiles (ogee, deep mitred) require 30mm or thicker stone. Engineered stone is most commonly available in 20mm.
What is the most popular edge profile for a stone benchtop?
View all edge profiles →The 20mm pencil round is the most widely specified benchtop edge profile in Sydney. It applies a small radius to the top edge — comfortable to the touch, resistant to chipping, and neutral enough to suit contemporary through to transitional interiors. Pencil round is the recommended starting point for most residential benchtops. Mitred edges (40mm or 100mm) are specified for statement island benchtops in high-end residential and commercial projects.
How do I care for a marble benchtop?
Marble will etch when it contacts acids — citrus juice, vinegar, wine, and acidic cleaning products will dull the polished surface over time. Seal marble annually with a penetrating stone sealer to reduce porosity. Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner or warm water — avoid bleach, vinegar, and abrasive pads. Wipe spills immediately. Honed marble is more forgiving than polished as surface marks are less visible. Many clients choose a honed finish for kitchen applications for this reason.
What happened with the engineered stone ban in Australia?
In July 2024, Australia banned the fabrication and installation of engineered stone products containing crystalline silica above 1% — the world's first national ban of its kind. The ban was introduced to protect stone workers from silicosis, a serious lung disease caused by inhaling silica dust during cutting and fabrication. Since then, manufacturers have reformulated products to non-silica alternatives. Engineered stone remains available in Australia — only silica-containing products are banned. Elite Marble & Granite works with both natural stone and compliant engineered stone.
Which stone is best for outdoor use and pool surrounds in Sydney?
Travertine (particularly filled and honed Classic Travertine) is the most popular choice for Sydney pool surrounds and outdoor areas. It is slip-resistant when honed, comfortable underfoot in heat, and ages gracefully in outdoor conditions. Granite is the most durable option for high-exposure outdoor areas. Marble is generally not recommended for pool surrounds due to its susceptibility to acid etching from pool chemicals and its tendency to become slippery when wet.
How much does stone benchtop fabrication cost in Sydney?
Start a conversation →Stone benchtop costs vary based on material choice, thickness, edge profile, surface area, and complexity. Natural stone benchtops generally range from $800–$2,500+ per linear metre for supply and fabrication, with installation additional. Premium materials and complex fabrication (bookmatched panels, rare quartzite) sit at the higher end. Engineered stone is typically more consistent in pricing. Elite Marble & Granite provides detailed quotes based on your specific drawings and material selection.
